When most people think of “Mexico,” they envision beaches, sand, and all-inclusive resorts. While these are certainly part of its charm, they don’t capture the essence of the real Mexico. Don’t get me wrong—we love relaxing on the beach, and they are indeed beautiful. However, Mexico is steeped in rich history and vibrant culture, and we’re here to give you a glimpse of this beautiful country’s true heart. Here is our recap discovering the heart of Mexico with family.
Mexico City: A Vibrant Beginning
We started our journey in the lively capital, Mexico City. The kids were fascinated by the rich history and vibrant culture. Our itinerary included visits to the stunning Palacio De Bellas Artes, the grand Catedral de Mexico, and the sacred Basilica de Guadalupe. The Antropologia Museum offered a deep dive into Mexico’s diverse cultural heritage, while the Frida Kahlo Museum provided a glimpse into the life of one of Mexico’s most iconic artists. We also marveled at the intricate tile work at Casa de los Azulejos, a true architectural gem.
Teotihuacan: Walking Among Giants
A short drive from Mexico City brought us to Teotihuacan, the ancient city of pyramids. And yes, while it surely cannot be compared to our experience visiting THE great pyramids in Egypt, these pyramids of Teotihuacan are still a marvel to feast your eyes on! Climbing the Pyramid of the Sun was an exhilarating experience for all of us. The view from the top was worth every step, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of this ancient civilization. The kids were thrilled to explore the Avenue of the Dead and learn about the history of the site.
The super cool & unique restaurant in a CAVE!
After exploring the pyramids, we visited La Gruta restaurant, just a short drive away. This unique restaurant, set in a cave, was a highlight of our trip. We even tried grasshoppers as part of their menu! It might not be for everyone, but we embraced it—if locals eat it, so shall we!
Puebla and Cholula: Colonial Charm and Sacred Sites
Our next stop was Puebla, a city known for its colonial architecture and delicious cuisine. We savored traditional dishes like mole poblano & the famous ‘cemita‘ pork sandwich (which originated from Puebla), and enjoyed the VERY vibrant atmosphere of the city! Our Puebla itinerary included visits to the Puebla Cathedral, Callejón De Los Sapos (Alley of the Frogs), Calle de Dulces de Sta. Clara, and Biblioteca Palafoxiana. We then made our way to Cholula’s Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios (Our Lady of Remedies Church), a 16th-century Mexican Catholic parish church built atop the Tlachihualtepetl pyramid (a.k.a. the Great Pyramid of Cholula) — The LARGEST pyramid in the world! The view from the top, with the stunning backdrop of the Popocatépetl volcano, was unforgettable.
Tolantongo Hot Springs: A Relaxing Retreat
Tolantongo was a true oasis. Nestled in the mountains, these natural hot springs provided a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. The kids loved swimming in the turquoise pools and exploring the caves, while we enjoyed soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters.
Xochimilco: Floating Gardens and Fun
Back in Mexico City, we spent a delightful day in Xochimilco. Our family had an amazing time floating on colorful trajineras, enjoying live mariachi music, and soaking in the beautiful scenery. 🌺🎶 We even ordered fresh grilled corn from a floating vendor—delicious and unforgettable! 🌽 The kids had a blast as we floated along, surrounded by the vibrant colors and festive energy.
Ik Kil Cenote: A Magical Swim
Our journey then took us to the Yucatan Peninsula, where we visited the breathtaking Ik Kil Cenote. The cenote, with its crystal-clear water and hanging vines, felt like a scene out of a fairy tale. Swimming in the cool, refreshing water was a highlight for the whole family.
Chichen Itza: One of the Seven Wonders
A visit to Mexico wouldn’t be complete without seeing Chichen Itza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The grandeur of the ancient Mayan ruins left us in awe. The kids were particularly fascinated by the massive El Castillo pyramid and the stories of ancient Mayan culture.
Cancun: Beach Bliss
We ended our trip with some much-needed relaxation in Cancun. Staying at the Westin Resort & Spa Cancun was a perfect way to unwind. The beautiful beaches, clear blue waters, and luxurious amenities provided the ideal backdrop for the final days of our adventure. The kids loved playing on the beach and swimming in the ocean, while we enjoyed the spa and stunning sunsets.
