Seoul: A Fusion of Culture and Urban Energy
Myeongdong night market
Our first stop was the bustling metropolis of Seoul, a city pulsating with energy and brimming with cultural treasures. Our exploration began with a culinary adventure at the Myeongdong night market, where the tantalizing aroma of street food filled the air. From savory dumplings to sweet pancakes, we indulged in a plethora of delectable treats, savoring each bite as we immersed ourselves in the lively atmosphere of the market. For us though, our highlight was those crispy soft shell crabs, fried to perfection!! We probably devoured the whole serving in less than 3 minutes! Yes, it was that good!
Moreover, we’d like to point out that much like our street food experiences in Singapore, it is completely SAFE and hygienic to enjoy street food in Korea! 😉
Starfield Library
Next on our itinerary was a visit to the iconic Starfield Library, a bibliophile’s paradise nestled within the bustling COEX Mall. Surrounded by towering shelves of books and bathed in natural light, the library provided a serene oasis amidst the urban hustle and bustle.
We then ventured to the Gangnam style hands statue (just outside the Starfield Library), an emblematic landmark paying homage to the global phenomenon that swept the world. As we posed for photos against the backdrop of this iconic symbol, we couldn’t help but marvel at the cultural impact of K-pop and its influence on popular culture.
Bongeunsa temple
Our exploration of Seoul’s cultural heritage continued with a visit to the Bongeunsa temple, a tranquil sanctuary nestled amidst the skyscrapers of the city. Here, we immersed ourselves in the serene ambiance, admiring the intricate architecture and partaking in a moment of quiet reflection.
Changdeokung Palace Garden
No visit to Seoul would be complete without exploring its majestic palaces, and we were fortunate to wander through the enchanting Changdeokung Palace Garden. Amidst lush greenery and ancient stone pathways, we marveled at the beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage site, steeped in history and tradition.
Bukchon Hanok Village
Immersing ourselves further in Seoul’s rich cultural tapestry, we strolled through the charming alleyways of Bukchon Hanok Village, where traditional Korean houses known as hanoks line the narrow streets. Here, amidst the rustic charm of centuries-old architecture, we gained insight into the timeless allure of Korean heritage.
Hongdae
Our journey through Seoul concluded with a visit to the vibrant neighborhood of Hongdae, renowned for its eclectic street art, trendy boutiques, and dynamic nightlife. As we wandered through its lively streets, we were captivated by the creative energy that permeated every corner, leaving us with memories to last a lifetime.
Busan: Coastal Splendor and Cultural Gems
The artsy Gamcheon Village and the Little Prince
Leaving behind the urban landscape of Seoul, we embarked on a scenic journey to the coastal city of Busan, where the tranquil beauty of the sea awaited us. Our first stop was the enchanting Gamcheon Culture Village, a kaleidoscope of colorful houses perched on a hillside overlooking the sea. Wandering through its labyrinthine alleyways adorned with vibrant murals, we felt as though we had stepped into a whimsical work of art.
Gamcheon seems like a strange place to be seeking out the boy from the famous French children’s book, The Little Prince, but he and his fox are here, sitting atop a wall overlooking the village. There are usually huge queues to take a photo with the statue, so use your discretion to judge if you have time to wait for a snap. You’ll also see the Little Prince and his fox feature in a lot of the souvenir shops around Gamcheon.
Honestly, besides the artsy vibe of this small town, with all the shopping and coffee shops offering towering & stunning views of Gamcheon, we surprisingly loved this place so much, we could probably spend the WHOLE DAY here!! 😅
Haedong Yonggung Temple
Next, we visited the breathtaking Haedong Yonggung Temple, perched on a cliff overlooking the azure waters of the East Sea. Against the backdrop of crashing waves and towering cliffs, we marveled at the temple’s exquisite architecture and serene ambiance, a testament to Korea’s rich spiritual heritage.
Haeundae Sky Capsule
Thrill-seekers among us eagerly boarded the unique Sky Capsule ride, offering panoramic views of Busan’s coastline from a dizzying height. As we soared high above the city, we were treated to a bird’s-eye perspective of its scenic beauty, a memory we would cherish long after the ride had ended. Of course, to avoid long line ups, we highly recommend you buy your tickets & make reservations in advance! 😉
Haeundae Beach
Our exploration of Busan’s coastal splendor continued with a leisurely stroll along the sunset-kissed shores of Haeundae Beach, where golden sands stretched as far as the eye could see. Here, amidst the backdrop of towering skyscrapers and bustling cafes, we basked in the serenity of the sea, savoring moments of tranquility amidst the vibrant energy of the city.
Haeundae Traditional Market
Our Busan adventure concluded with a visit to the lively Haeundae Traditional Market, a bustling hub where the essence of coastal life permeates the air. Amidst the vibrant hustle and bustle, we indulged in an array of freshly caught seafood delicacies, tantalizing our taste buds with the flavors of the sea. From succulent grilled fish to briny shellfish, each bite was a culinary delight, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of Busan. As we meandered through the market stalls, adorned with colorful displays of artisanal crafts and local produce, we couldn’t help but feel immersed in the vibrant tapestry of Busan’s coastal culture.
