It was the middle of winter in Canada and I was yearning to plan a little family getaway. My husband found this gorgeous little hidden gem, located just 1 hour north of Toronto, through Airbnb. We figured that this would be a great experience to prep the girls up before camping, and also to recharge and unwind from the daily grind. This charming little cabin is situated in a 15 acre property, highlighted by rows of tall trees and a frozen pond. (during winter). We were hoping for some snow that day we arrived. We had just enough for the pond to be frozen but not enough to make a snowman. The owner greeted us warmly upon our arrival, as we unpacked our belongings for the night. The inside of the cottage had 2 separate rooms, the backroom offers a little kitchenette and bathroom (w/airhead compost toilet) and the main living area includes a wood burning stove with modern furniture (sofa, stools, and table). A ladder is provided to reach the loft or bedroom of the cabin with an air mattress included.
Once our belongings were unpacked, fun and laughter were none stop with our girls. We roamed the property and brought out our sled to pull the girls around on the frozen pond. Hockey sticks and the puck were also provided for fun and entertainment. Snow angels were created and left on the pond. Our night ended, as we stoked the wood burning oven, heated up our dinner and cozied up by the fire, reading stories, coloring books, and playing rounds of memories and go fish card games together. When dinner was complete, we tucked the little ones of to bed and admired the peacefulness and tranquility being away from the hustle and bustle of the city life.
The next morning we awoke to a beautiful setting with the faint morning light hitting the pond and surrounding trees. Such an unforgettable experience, and precious memories created even if it was just the night. Sometimes all you need is a day to disconnect and unwind with the special people in your life and this getaway fulfilled that expectation and another experience checked off our list.
